One week from today I will start hiking the Pacific Crest Trail! Its so hard to totally grasp that thought. I am so excited and pretty nervous, but this is what I have been looking forward to and working so hard all this time for!
On March 26th I drove down to my grandma’s house here in Corona, CA and have been spending everyday getting all my resupply boxes together which has been an overwhelming project. I am so grateful and thankful that I have such an amazing and supportive family. They have been helping me to get all this ready for my epic journey. My brother even drove over from Las Vegas and helped me package food which I am sure saved me an entire days worth of work. Here are some pics of the process…
I will be resupplying 30 times which is a lot but I am going with the plan of resupplying more often and with that in mind being able to carry less food at a time. I will also have the opportunity to supplement my diet with whatever additional calories I may end up finding necessary.

I hope to update as often as possible!!! :-)
DeleteRecommend starting at 10 miles a day and add 1 every two days to avoid stress fractures (Physical Therapist here as well)
ReplyDeleteNothing to be nervous about--you just keep putting one foot forward. Some tips to making it:
-Think next resupply and don't think about Canada until Washington.
-Don't listen to all the future what ifs from the experts who have never walked it. IE what if Fuller Ridge is impassable? What if there is snow in the Sierras? It is never as bad as they think. At Warner Springs people were already worried about Glacier Peak--in Washington. I went through a record snow year my first attempt in John Muir section that others skipped. (Injury later in oregon so started over in 2012 from mexico and thru hiked to completion) Everyone has an opinion on the future trail conditions they haven't even seen yet.
-Have a size bigger shoe as your feet will swell
-Yogi's books are totally accurate usually
Good luck

Thank you so much! I plan on doing exactly what you said in regards to starting slow for sure! :-)
DeleteSo you're out to find The Shepherd. You will out there in the wind and mountains. I'll be following your blog now as I sit with the comforts of the civilized world. Any questions--- ask. I've done 2007 miles of the PCT twice and went end to end the second time injury free and got the thru hike medal in '12.
DeleteThis time of year the desert gets cold and both years I got hit with rain at Morena Lake. Be ready. Gets cold in Mt Laguna and windstorms are notorious--make sure your tent is secure. Warner Springs is your first mental landmark--think of nothing but Warner. On cold days always remember you will be warm again soon. Think next break--next zero day.
Hauser Canyon wasn't great at letting you know where the trail is as at the southern end you exit on a dirt road--then the trail marker sign is off the dirt road further down on the other side. Something like a ten or fifteen minute walk--usually someone puts arrows where the Forest Service didn't--you'll see the marker eventually further down the dirt road. Creek was flowing well even in the dry year in 2012 this time of year.
I'll be on the JMT south to north sometime in June.
Good luck and God speed--go find The Shepherd in the wilderness.

Hi Angela
ReplyDeleteThe long awaited April is here. I bet you thought it would never arrive.
Just a few thought to encourage from my favorite trail person and me.
I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. ~John Muir, 1913, in Linnie Marsh Wolfe, ed., John of the Mountains: The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938
As I walk along, I am not alone
For the breath of life engulfs my soul
While the sound of the wind echoes through the trees
My singleness becomes a part of the whole
The fear of being bound gives way to being free
As I walk along, I am not alone
Hill-Billy
The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life
I will advise you and watch over you.” Ps 32.8
The task is never greater than the person.
Thank you Hill-Billy!!! That was so beautiful! :-) God Bless!
DeleteHave you seen the Biolite? Charges your phone while burning twigs and doubles as a cook stove. Good luck! Looking forward to updates
ReplyDeleteYeah that thing looks cool! :-)
DeleteTry resupplying in Mammoth instead of VVR. Much cheaper, plus Mammoth is a cool town.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Change made :-)
DeleteAny chance you could post your gear list? ;)
ReplyDeleteWorking on it... It's a pain LOL

ReplyDeleteCan not wait to follow your progress! I am planning on hiking a 500 mile portion of the PCT between the homes of 2 friends and find real experiences from others extremely helpful.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Pulling for you! Will be following along.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Angela. Thank you for being such a badass woman. I can't wait to read updates :)
